Private beta · desktop app

Your money, kept on your machine.

FinnyBuddy is a local-first personal finance tracker. Import your bank exports, see where the money goes, and keep every byte on your own computer.

There is no public download yet. FinnyBuddy is in private beta, and this site hosts the phone relay used by beta testers.

    Features

Everything a spending tracker needs. Nothing it does not.

A Tauri desktop app with a SQLite database on your disk. The only outbound traffic is optional: exchange rates, store pictures when you ask for them, and your own relay once a phone is paired.

    CSV import

N26 and Swedish formats built in, with per-bank profiles. Preview before anything is saved, and undo an import.

    Automatic duplicate detection

Overlapping exports never double-count, identical same-day purchases are kept, and a review page handles look-alikes.

    Categorisation rules

Ordered rules by substring or regex, applied on import and re-runnable. Manual choices are never overwritten.

    Spending dashboards

Spending, income or net over any range, grouped by month, quarter or year. Click through to categories and months.

    Multi-currency display

Cached ECB reference rates convert amounts for display. Stored amounts never change.

    Stores and items

Link a transaction to a store and list the items bought. Items belong to shared item categories.

    Receipts, read offline

Items are found from a photo, screenshot or PDF with built-in text recognition. Nothing is uploaded.

    Backups and watched folder

Back up the whole database to one file and restore it later. CSVs dropped in a folder are imported automatically.

    Phone relay

Snap a receipt. Your desktop picks it up.

The photo is encrypted on the phone to a key only your desktop holds. The relay server only ever holds scrambled files, until your desktop collects and deletes them. The desktop checks when it starts and then every 5 minutes.

      How to pair

      Three steps, about a minute.

      1. 1

        Press "Pair phone"

In the FinnyBuddy desktop app, press the Pair phone button. A QR code appears. Codes last 10 minutes.

      2. 2

        Scan it with your phone

Open the camera and scan the QR code. The link carries your desktop's public key, so the server cannot swap in its own.

      3. 3

        Confirm, then send receipts

Name the phone and confirm. After that, take a photo or choose files, and they travel encrypted. Up to 3 phones per desktop.

Already paired? Open the phone app.

      Privacy and threat model

What this relay can and cannot see.

      The relay sees

      • How big each upload is, and when it arrived
      • Your IP address when a phone or desktop connects
      • That a desktop and up to three phones are paired

      The relay cannot see

      • The receipt itself: photos and PDFs are encrypted on the phone
      • Any bank data: the desktop app never sends it
      • The key: only your desktop holds it

An honest limit. The phone app is a web page served by this server. A compromised server could in theory serve a modified page that reads a receipt before it is encrypted. The desktop only ever talks to the one relay address set in its settings, so you can point it at a relay you run yourself.
